OLIO: A food sharing app with a generous side of social purpose

As we have just ended some of the most wasteful days of the year, we are excited to share our investment in OLIO, the world’s leading food-sharing platform.

Olio was founded by two incredible female founders on a mission to eliminate the food waste in people’s homes across the world. Tessa, raised on a farm, and Saasha, raised in a hippy commune, are both Stanford MBAs and former bankers/consultants putting everything they can at work to solve a massive global problem. Between 33-50% of all food produced globally is never eaten, and half of that food waste takes place in people’s homes.

OLIO is a peer-to-peer foodsharing app to prevent food waste by connecting neighbours (as well as local businesses) in hyper local communities. OLIO believes that small actions, every day, can lead to big change. Collectively – one rescued cupcake, carrot or bottle of lotion at a time – we can build a more sustainable future where our most precious resources are shared, not thrown away. The ambition of OLIO is that by 2030 we can halve the food waste in people’s homes and the local community. OLIO’s food sharing platform empowers users to share surplus food, accelerating the sharing economy mind-set while building local communities. Since it was founded in 2015, OLIO has signed up more than 1,600,000 users across 49 countries. Here’s a short video to see how it works.
